SID Academy Symposium in Motion 2023.

The SID Academy presents an afternoon with Mr. Nicholas Merrow-Smith who will guide us through interesting aspects of Healthcare Design.

Learn what makes healthcare design fascinating. The speaker covers such topics as enhancing patient, visitor and staff experiences through the application of design thinking in a multi-disciplined environment. Learn about the design process, understanding your role and how to identify problems to solve.

In opening, Nicholas describes the Healthcare Transformation taking place in the industry. He touches on digital health, changes in licensing of medical practices and technologies including augmented surgery, 3D printing, portable devices, virtual environments and immersive experience created by designers. He highlights the importance of the design consultant as patient advocate in an environment packed with important stakeholders and discusses the unique spaces consultants may be required to design. He further highlights where interior designers can make a difference in healthcare design and discusses the growing importance of design thinking, multi-disciplinary design and evidenced based design.

In the closing, Nicholas discusses the Design Process. He focuses on the role of the designer, identifying and solving problems, design workflow, communicating ideas, having them approved and working with contractors to ensure the promise is delivered. He closes by sharing examples of his design process and finished projects including a Breast Cancer Centre, Nodal Health Centre and a Nursing Home Care Remodelling project.
